Labour confirmed no other candidates had been shortlisted in the seat vacated by Josh Simons – with the byelection now widely expected to take place on 18 June , once the date is confirmed by Commons authorities.

Sources on the NEC said other candidates had applied to stand in the constituency but had not been shortlisted.

Burnham will face Reform UK’s Robert Kenyan, a plumber who was the party’s candidate in the general election, who has been confirmed as the party’s candidate.

Kenyon came within 5,399 votes at the last election in 2024 against Simons for Labour.
