Former French prime minister Édouard Philippe, a centrist seen as one of the leading contenders to replace President Emmanuel Macron in next year's presidential race, is the target of an investigation probing alleged embezzlement of public funds and other misconduct, the national financial prosecutor's office said Tuesday. Prosecutors also announced a probe into another presidential candidate and former minister, Dominique de Villepin, over gifts he accepted while in office.
